Reimagining education in the 21st century
Visiting lecture at the Department of English and German Philology (Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University) in Ukraine
Today, I was invited by the Department of English and German Philology (Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University) for a guest lecture on the topic of Learning and Teaching English Across Cultures: constantly reimagining education in the 21st century.
Invited by Tetyana Lunyova and greeted by Maryna Zuyenko (Director of the Department) and Iryna Kohut (International Relations), I had the opportunity to talk in front of their students about teaching and learning English in a world which seems to be constantly on the move. How has the constant flux of refugees impacted our classrooms? And what is the impact of economic migration and International student mobility? Have Universities employed marketing strategies to attract these International students? How have these conditions shaped the new role of ELF? Internationalisation of universities hand-in-hand with ‘Englishisation’? How has the acceptance of ‘Englishes’ shaped our classrooms? Has COVID fast-forwarded the technological developments in language teaching previously discussed by educators and curriculum designers? Considering the new circumstances, what needs to be taught to be productive members of society in the 21st Century? What is the role of soft skills in English language teaching and how significant are they today?
These were the questions asked in my lecture and to these, I tried to give some answers to demonstrate the new ‘scenery’ in our profession. The discussion that followed was exciting and informative. Special thanks to the hosts for their kind invitation.
